Rapid Development and Towards a Sustainable Future of Vietnam’s Automotive Industry

24/05/2024

In recent years, Vietnam’s automotive industry has made significant strides, contributing notably to the country’s economic and social development. This growth is evidenced not only by increased domestic production and assembly of automobiles but also by fostering international cooperation and developing ancillary industries.

Domestic Automobile Production Status

According to the latest report from the General Statistics Office, domestic automobile production and assembly reached 24,500 units in March 2024, a robust 52% increase from the previous month. Cumulatively for Q1 2024, approximately 62,200 vehicles were manufactured and assembled, indicating strong recovery post-Tet holiday and fierce competition among automotive manufacturers.

Pressure from Imported Automobiles

However, the influx of completely built-up (CBU) imports into Vietnam has surged, particularly in March 2024 with 15,000 units, marking a 150% rise from the previous month. Vietnam imported over 31,450 automobiles in Q1 2024, predominantly from Indonesia, Thailand, and China, reflecting diverse consumer choices and heightened purchasing demands.

Notably, the enforcement of trade agreements such as ATIGA, CPTPP, and EVFTA has further boosted automobile imports to Vietnam. This growth poses challenges for the domestic automobile manufacturing sector, necessitating enhancements in competitive capabilities and sustainable development strategies.

International Collaboration and Technological Development

  • International Collaboration and Technological Advancement

Collaboration with leading global automobile manufacturers is pivotal in enhancing Vietnam’s automotive industry competitiveness. Such partnerships facilitate technology and manufacturing expertise sharing, while opening doors to global markets. Consequently, Vietnam’s automotive industry gains access to advanced technologies and optimized production processes, thereby improving product quality and international competitiveness.

  • Technological Development and Production Capacity

Investment in research and development (R&D) of technology is crucial for the sustainable growth of Vietnam’s automotive industry. Adoption of advanced technologies not only enhances competitive capabilities but also reduces production costs and increases labor efficiency.

Simultaneously, technological advancements create opportunities for producing new automobile models that meet the increasingly diverse market demands.

Support for Domestic Automotive Industry: Policies and Future Prospects

  • Challenges from Semiconductor Chip Dependence

The reliance on imported semiconductor chips presents numerous challenges for Vietnam’s automotive industry, with up to 80% dependency on component imports. Chip shortages can disrupt production, escalate costs, and impact competitiveness. Moreover, dependence on international component supply chains poses risks related to market fluctuations and international trade policies.

  • Opportunities from Domestic Technological Development

However, amidst challenges lie opportunities. Domestic investment in semiconductor chip manufacturing technology not only reduces import dependence but also establishes a promising new sector within Vietnam’s high-tech industry. Developing domestic component supply chains not only mitigates risks but also promotes innovation and enhances comprehensive competitiveness of the domestic automotive industry.

The strengthened domestic production and assembly of automobiles alongside diversified import choices have propelled Vietnam’s automotive industry further on the global stage. International collaboration and technological advancements are key highlights in the industry’s development strategy, enhancing competitive capabilities and sustainability of Vietnam’s automotive sector.
