Vietnam and China are increasingly strengthening their cooperation in the field of transportation, particularly in railway systems. Recently, the Vietnam Railway Authority and the National Railway Administration of China have made significant progress in connecting the standard-gauge railways between the two countries.

Connecting Two Nations with a Standard-Gauge Railway
Starting from 2025, the standard-gauge railway is expected to officially link Lào Cai station (Vietnam) with Hà Khẩu Bắc station (China). This will be a crucial transportation route, opening up significant opportunities for boosting trade and tourism between the two nations. The construction of the dual-gauge railway (1,000 mm and 1,435 mm) ensures compatibility with the existing railway systems in both countries, enhancing the efficiency of both passenger and freight transportation.
Expanding Railway Cooperation Between Vietnam and China
Currently, the two countries are actively negotiating to sign an intergovernmental agreement on the standard-gauge railway connection, providing a solid legal foundation for the project. In addition to the Lào Cai – Hà Nội – Hải Phòng route, Vietnam and China are also exploring the potential development of other railway lines such as Đồng Đăng – Hà Nội and Móng Cái – Hạ Long – Hải Phòng.
Modernizing the Railway System
Upgrading the railway to a standard gauge will not only improve transportation services but also reduce travel time and logistics costs. Both countries are also collaborating to revise the Vietnam-China Border Railway Agreement, creating more favorable conditions for international intermodal transportation by rail.
