Navigating the Digital Transformation Journey: Optimizing Logistics for Socio-Economic Growth

24/05/2024

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has brought significant transformations across various sectors, with remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence and computer science. These breakthroughs are reshaping how humans interact with the world, unlocking new opportunities for businesses to optimize processes, enhance productivity, and reduce costs.

Furthermore, digital transformation in the logistics sector not only helps reduce costs and improve service quality but also strengthens connectivity within organizations and across supply chains. This not only enhances the efficiency and competitiveness of businesses and the logistics industry but also positively impacts the entire economy.

Building upon the benefits of digital transformation in logistics, Decision No. 749/QD-TTg dated June 3, 2020, by the Prime Minister identifies logistics as one of the 8 priority sectors for digital transformation in the National Digital Transformation Program until 2025, with a vision towards 2030.

So, what are the challenges and limitations in the digital transformation of the logistics sector? What are the directions and solutions to address these challenges? Let’s explore through the following article!

The Vietnam Logistics Forum 2023, themed “Logistics and Digital Transformation for the Mekong Delta,” was held on December 2, 2023, in Can Tho City, organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in coordination with the Can Tho City People’s Committee.

The forum aims to identify directions and solutions to overcome challenges and optimize the benefits of digital transformation to enhance Vietnam’s logistics services, contributing to overall socio-economic development, especially in the Mekong Delta region.

Challenges and Solutions

According to the World Bank, the Mekong Delta region has an annual demand for exporting goods of about 18 million tons. However, the region lacks key logistics centers, satellite systems, empty container yards, and warehouse systems at ports. Therefore, logistics activities in Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region are still in the early stages of development, yet to fully leverage their role in promoting production, exports, especially agricultural product businesses – the region’s strength. The transportation infrastructure still has existing limitations, not meeting the requirements for comprehensive, modern transportation development, internal connectivity, and international integration.

Proposed Main Tasks

Based on the aforementioned realities, the Central Economic Committee proposes focusing on implementing several key tasks as follows:

1. The Central Economic Committee continues to study and coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and relevant units to deeply assess the current situation and direction for developing efficient and sustainable logistics activities. The goal is to propose solutions to overcome difficulties, promote further development in the logistics sector in general and logistics for the Mekong Delta region in particular, to enhance the competitiveness and economic efficiency of the agricultural value chain.

2. The Party Central Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Trade leads the coordination with relevant ministries, sectors, and localities to review and evaluate the implementation of Prime Minister’s decisions related to enhancing competitiveness and developing logistics services in Vietnam until 2025. At the same time, it leads the implementation of tasks and solutions to promote logistics development, especially in building the logistics development strategy of Vietnam until 2035, with a vision towards 2045, integrating related digital transformation content.

3. Localities in the Mekong Delta region and nationwide coordinate to implement assigned tasks to develop synchronized logistics systems, adjust local economic planning and structure, and build effective logistics service support policies that are suitable for the economic and social characteristics of each locality.

4. The Ministry of Industry and Trade, together with relevant agencies, continues to innovate the organization and content of the Logistics Forum to create a nationally reputable forum, attracting a wide range of participants, including localities, management officials, experts, and businesses.
