What is CBM? How to Calculate and Convert CBM in Import-Export
CBM (Cubic Meter), also known as cubic meter (m³), is a volume measurement unit widely used in the logistics and import-export industry. CBM helps businesses calculate the space occupied by goods, thereby determining appropriate shipping costs for each mode of transportation.
What is CBM in logistics and import-export?
CBM stands for Cubic Meter – a unit of volume measurement. In transportation, CBM simply refers to the space that a shipment occupies on a transport vehicle (ship, airplane, truck, etc.).

Sức chứa tối đa của một container có thể chứa bao nhiêu CBM?
CBM meaning: CBM is the basis for carriers to calculate shipping fees based on volume instead of weight, which is especially important for lightweight, bulky goods.
The role of CBM in cargo transportation
CBM plays an important role in many aspects of the supply chain and logistics:
- Determining shipping costs: Volume-based charges help distinguish between heavy and light goods (volume vs weight).
- Space optimization: Helps efficiently arrange cargo in containers and warehouses, reducing storage costs.
- Application across multimodal transportation: Whether by road, air, or sea, CBM is always a necessary figure to calculate load capacity.
How to accurately calculate CBM

How to accurately calculate CBM
CBM formula:
CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m) × Number of packages
Example:
A package has the dimensions 2m x 1.5m x 1m:
→ CBM = 2 × 1.5 × 1 = 3 CBM
Notes:
- If measured in cm, divide by 100 to convert to meters.
- Measure the outer packaging since that is the actual space occupied.
- For irregularly shaped goods, use the largest dimension of each side to ensure accuracy.
CBM to Kilogram (kg) conversion rates
Depending on the mode of transportation, 1 CBM equals different weight units:
| Mode of transport | Conversion rate |
| Air freight | 1 CBM = 167 kg |
| Road freight | 1 CBM = 333 kg |
| Sea freight | 1 CBM = 1000 kg |
How to calculate chargeable weight by transport type
Air Freight
Example:
- 10 packages, each: 100cm x 90cm x 80cm
- Weight per package: 100 kg
- Convert to meters: 1m x 0.9m x 0.8m → 0.72 CBM/package
- Total volume: 0.72 × 10 = 7.2 CBM
- Volumetric weight: 7.2 × 167 = 1202.4 kg
- Chargeable weight: Compare to actual weight of 1000 kg → use 1202.4 kg

Sea Freight
Example:
- 10 packages, each: 120cm x 100cm x 150cm (1.8 CBM/package)
- Total volume: 10 × 1.8 = 18 CBM
- Total actual weight: 8000 kg
- Volumetric weight: 18 × 1000 = 18,000 kg
- Chargeable weight: 18,000 kg (greater than actual weight)

Road Freight
Example:
- 10 packages, each: 120cm x 100cm x 180cm → 2.16 CBM/package
- Total volume: 10 × 2.16 = 21.6 CBM
- Total weight: 9600 kg
- Volumetric weight: 21.6 × 333 = 7192.8 kg
- Chargeable weight: 9600 kg (actual weight is higher)
